Areca nut, also known in Indonesia as betel nut. Natives chew it for its stimulant, addictive, and intoxicating properties. When we were working on a farm harvesting rice in Indonesia, most of the working women there were chewing it and it made their mouths and lips turn a reddish colour. We decided to give it a go, because you know, when in Rome… The initial flavour was enough to make us gag, but then after a while it was like chewing a really strong aniseed ball. Final take: each to their own.
