1 tuk tuk, 2 ferries and 3 buses later we arrive at a remote island in the Philippines anchored amongst beautiful coral reef. As newly qualified divers we thought this island was going to be a scuba dream for us. Turns out we were destined to learn the ins and outs of Tupada - illegal cockfighting. When we stumbled across the first Tupada, locals were dubious about letting us watch, unless we followed these rules: no recording, and if the cock runs towards you, then RUN. Everyone watched with a hushed respect as a man carefully strapped blades to the feet of both cocks, we later came to know this man as Gaffa. The following day he ended up being our snorkeling guide, we made friends with him over a coconut at his mams house and then he invited us to watch more cockfights, but we were not allowed to tell anyone as it was forbidden on Sundays. We brought the beers and he welcomed us into the world of cockfighting.
