Little Susie

Little Susie is the name of a jazz/blues bar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It’s cozy, dimly lit with good vibes. We were enjoying a blues band with a glass of wine, when the main singer asked the crowd if there was anybody that would like to come up and sing with them. The room washed with silence and then, my best friend, Beth’s hand shot up. My heart sank out of my arse. I’d only ever sang karaoke with her, where we both scream Untouched by The Veronicas into the mic (if you know the song, you’re a don). So, I’m starting to panic thinking this is not the sort of place you do that in. I’m preparing myself for the second hand embarrassment that I feel is inevitably coming when the band starts playing the opening tune of ‘Valerie’. Beth’s voice began floating round the room, perfectly in tune as if by magic. Confidence radiated from her as she poured her soul into the performance.  Everyone was  captivated by her and I sat there completely spellbound bursting with pride. That’s how little Susie turned our ordinary night out into something I’ll never forget. I’m still buzzing thinking about it.
