In Bukit Lawang, a rural village at the edge of one of the only two tropical rainforests in the world home to wild orangutans, Kristan and I spent two weeks working on Erna’s Eco farm. Along with another traveller, Will, we learned permaculture techniques: making raised beds, mixing compost, sowing tomatoes in recycled hanging pots and planting rice with giggly local women. While it was brutal working in the heat, the mixture of hospitality and the slow paced lifestyle made it such a welcome break from the fast paced travelling we'd done along the way. The cherry on top was a jungle trek, where orangutans swung between trees just meters above us. All thanks go to Erna for hosting us through such a wholesome fortnight.
