We found out about the sad truths of the secret war whilst walking around a lovely market in Luang Prubang, Laos. Everywhere we went stalls were selling jewellery made from bomb shrapnel. Whilst the war was not a secret to the people of Laos, it remained hidden from the west for years and its not still common knowledge today. Even though Laos was an officially neutral country according to international agreements in the Vietnam war, it is the most bombed country in the world. The remnants of this atrocity are still evident today, in the small markets of a quiet suburban village, where villagers are still risking there lives to extract the metal from unexploded bombs to sell as jewellery for pennies.
